Coleman had to endure a great deal of hostility when he appeared on the scene in the late 50's from those who either resented, didn't understand or just didn't like the way he chose to ignore rules which many musicians considered fundamental to jazz and had devoted countless hours of practice to learning, it's amazing that the work of one of the 20th century's greatest and most influential artists can still provoke such knee jerk reactions 40 years after its original release.
