John McLaughlin and Shakti - Guitar Melody on "Joy"
Max Ahma transcribed this tune. He did a great job on this song which is a very difficult piece. This song is from a band that guitarist John Mclaughlin had (and still does) in the seventies called Shakti. I have this song on a CD called "The Best of Shakti". The band featured Mclaughlin on acoustic guitar, Zakir Hussain on tabla, timbales, bongos, Naal, Dholak, triangles, vocals, T.H. Vinayakram on Ghatam, Mridangam, Kanjeera, Moorsing, vocals, Shankar on violin, viola, vocals , and R. Raghvan on Mridangam. Shakti drew on many traditions for it's music: North and South Indian classical music, jazz, folk, and contemporary music. I really love this band and Mclaughlin has a reincarnated version of it again called Remember Shakti that's touring this November. For more info on Indian classical music, check the Sounds of India section on my site.
